Message from Deputy Minister of Mercantile Marine, the Aegean & Island Policy

3/7/2009

Greece is a maritime nation. The craft of sailing was born and perfected in our islands by Greek sailors. Seamanship has always been found in the soul of each and every islander since the time they were born.

Aegean Regatta, like every other maritime activity highlights our talent, our love for the sea, our unique knowledge and expertise in seamanship as well as the culture, history and unique beauty of our islands.

No other country and no other citizen in the world can embrace and organise maritime events with such efficiency. We must be proud for this and we ought to take advantage of this unique talent of ours on every occassion in order to promote our islands and our beautiful and unique Aegean Sea.

Nowadays Greece, more than ever, is ready to take the chance and play a leading role in the international tourist industry.

Thematic tourism, such as Aegean Regatta promotes our tourism and has the ability to make the tourist season longer, attracting sailors who wish to combine the pleasures of a sailing competition with the ones of a holiday.

The significance of Aegean Regatta for the tourism of our country is indisputable and the state ought to provide every possible support so that its continuation and creative updating can be secured according to the demands of this specific tourist activity.

Congratulations to the organizers and all those people who offer their help every year in order for this important maritime event to be held.

From the bottom of my heart, I wish to this year's competitors fair winds, calm seas, fast and safe sailing.

Mr. Panos Kamenos

Deputy Minister of Mercantile Marine,
